BioMin and VOCO: Advancing Preventive Dentistry Through Innovation
Dental varnish is a staple in any dental practice, enabling clinicians to provide patients with a reliable option for prevention. However, a new collaboration means that the efficacy of dental varnish has been enhanced.
BioMin® and VOCO have partnered to bring together VOCO’s proven fluoride varnish and BioMin®’s pioneering bioactive glass technology resulting in the benchmark innovation in preventative dentistry. VOCO Profluorid® Varnish + BioMin® is the first time the bioactive material has been included in a fluoride varnish, growing its application beyond toothpaste to enhance in-practice preventative dental care.
Emily Thambi, dentist and research assistant at Queen Mary University of London, commented, “The main benefit of having a bioactive glass in a fluoride varnish is that you get a controlled, consistent release of calcium and phosphate along with fluoride – able to form fluorapatite that is more acid resistant than hydroxyapatite which is what most of your enamel is made of.”
A science-first approach
Developed in collaboration with Professor Robert Hill at Queen Mary University of London, the bioactive material is already successfully incorporated in toothpaste. In the presence of saliva, BioMin®’s bioactive glass gradually releases calcium and phosphate ions that help rebuild and strengthen enamel.
However, within the formulation of VOCO Profluorid® Varnish + BioMin®, these ions are combined with the fluoride from the varnish, forming crystalline structures on the tooth surface in order to significantly harden acid-weakened enamel. This unique combination provides double the protection — forming a durable crystalline layer while delivering long-lasting and comprehensive sensitivity relief. Clinical data reveals a significant increase in enamel hardness, effective desensitisation, and strong resistance to demineralisation.[I]
Designed for use in the dental practice, VOCO Profluorid® Varnish + BioMin® is ideal for the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity, after hygiene appointments, and in molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) cases. The dental varnish retains VOCO’s trusted 5% NaF concentration (22,600 ppm fluoride) for proven and long-lasting desensitisation. Plus, for maximum patient satisfaction and compliance, the varnish is available in multiple flavours: mint, cherry, caramel, and bubble gum.
Collaboration in prevention
VOCO and BioMin® have a shared commitment to advance preventative and minimally invasive dentistry, with VOCO’s clinical reliability and global reach alongside BioMin®’s university-originated innovation, VOCO Profluorid® Varnish + BioMin® is an excellent solution for patients in the practice.
Alec Hilton, BioMin® CEO, said, “Our partnership with VOCO is truly exciting. Collaborating with another industry leader allows us to bring this innovative product to market, powered by BioMin® technology. Our goal is to expand access to BioMin’s bioactive glass technology, benefiting consumers worldwide, and this partnership is a significant step toward achieving that vision.”
