Making toothbrushing fun and effective – the importance of supervision for kids

There is ongoing concern surrounding children’s oral health, with early signs of dental issues often developing into lifelong problems. Despite increasing awareness, children still fall short in maintaining oral hygiene largely due to a lack of supervision and education. Encouraging children to clean their teeth can be a tedious task. Education for both children and their parents/guardians around the importance of oral health is essential.

The value of early habits

Introducing good oral hygiene habits from an early age is crucial. Not only does it protect children’s current teeth, but it also helps instil positive behaviours into adulthood. This has a lasting impact on children’s oral health, and their confidence and independence too. Parents/guardians can correct techniques and assist in maintaining consistency.

The significance of supervision

One of the easiest ways to encourage good oral hygiene habits is through supervised brushing. Children find it easier to see past chore-like acts such as brushing teeth when a more entertaining and fun environment is established. By tailoring the act of toothbrushing to the child, the importance of it can be gently reiterated in a setting that children find themselves genuinely enjoying.

Technique to tools

Guidance on effective toothbrushing also includes the tools used. Support involves educating children on the amount of toothpaste required and helping them to navigate brush types and techniques. Each of these elements of supervised brushing ensure that damage to gums and enamel is minimised whilst still removing plaque. Furthermore, the quality and consistency of the routine is maintained following gentle corrections.

Selecting appropriate products for children

Children’s reluctance to engage with these important routines might be from a range of factors: discomfort while brushing, lack of understanding, or even distaste for the toothpaste. In one particular study, of 787 5-12 year old children surveyed, 80% stated that they would prefer toothpaste flavour options other than mint-flavoured.[i] This shows how influential product choice can be in encouraging regular brushing.

BioMin® F for Kids can be used to improve the brushing experience and encourage participation in the activity. Its enticing strawberry flavour supports not only willingness, but excitement to brush teeth.

BioMin® F for Kids offers features tailored to meet the needs of young teeth, containing a lower level of fluoride (530ppm), which is safer for children while still being effective. The gentle fluoride level works in harmony with developing enamel, helping to strengthen and protect without the risk of overexposure.

What makes BioMin truly unique is its patented mineral release technology, which delivers a steady and responsive supply of calcium, phosphate, and fluoride mineral ions over 10-12 hours after brushing. This continuous protection helps to guard young teeth against acid attacks caused by frequent snacking and sugary drinks — common habits in many children’s daily routines. Instead of washing away like conventional toothpastes, BioMin® F for Kids keeps working long after they’ve run off to play.

Building lifelong habits

Supervised toothbrushing is not only effective, but essential for improving current oral health with long-lasting routines. When home support is paired with age-appropriate and enjoyable products, the risk of tooth decay and dental complications are significantly reduced.

The science is clear. The solution is simple. www.biomin.co.uk
