Bioglass Technology
A revolutionary bioactive material made with Extra Fine particles that bond to the tooth.
These particles penetrate and occlude the dentinal tubules for superior protection against sensitivity and strengthen and protect the tooth enamel. BioMin® F utilises a fluoride containing bioactive glass designed, patented and optimised specifically for use as a toothpaste additive.
It is unique in its ability to bond to the tooth enamel and dissolve slowly over 12 hours, delivering slow-release fluoride and optimal concentrations of calcium and phosphate ions. This enhances the way saliva replaces lost mineral on the tooth surfaces forming a fluorapatite layer that protects the tooth surface.
-
Developed by scientists and dental clinicians at Queen Mary University of London
-
When brushing teeth, the fine glass particles stick to the surface of teeth but cannot be seen or felt
-
A halide bioglass (silica matrix) containing calcium, phosphate and fluoride that slowly dissolves in water
-
On contact with saliva (acidic food or even water) the bioglass starts to slowly dissolve and releases the calcium, phosphate and fluoride over time
-
Raw materials melted at 1450 Celsius and quenched in cold water to produce glass frit, which is then milled to produce the required minute particle size for toothpaste formulation
-
These elements combine and the resulting fluorapatite crystalises on the tooth surface and inside any exposed dentine tubules
Slow-release Fluoride
Challenging our understanding of how much fluoride a toothpaste needs to contain
Challenging our understanding of how much fluoride a toothpaste needs to contain

BioMin® F’s patented bioglass technology bonds to the tooth, slowly releasing fluoride for up to 12 hours enabling continuous production of acid resistant fluorapatite.
Research has shown that it’s not the quantity of fluoride that predicts a toothpaste’s ability to prevent decay, but the way it’s delivered.
Studies show BioMin® delivers superior performance with slow-release fluoride and higher phosphate, despite using 60% less fluoride than many OTC toothpastes.

"Fluoride-containing bioactive glasses: Effect of glass design and structure on degradation, pH and apatite formation in simulated body fluid" (2010).
Delia S. Brauer, Natalia Karpukhina, Matthew D. O'Donnell, Robert V. Law, Robert G. Hill

BioMin® F challenges conventional fluoride concentrations with just 530ppm, releasing it slowly for advanced protection and lasting sensitivity relief.
Bioactive glasses with more than 5mol% CaF2 form fluorite rather than fluorapatite, the fluoride analogue of the tooth mineral.
(see chart above)
A study* showed that BioMin® F with 900ppm soluble fluoride had similar apatite formation rates as BioMin® F alone, indicating the extra fluoride was washed away and therefore ineffective.

“Simply increasing the amount of fluoride is not the solution, it invariably just goes to waste.”
Robert Hill
Head of Dental Sciences, Queen Mary University of London, England

“For fluoride treatments to be effective longer than the brushing and salivary clearance - fluoride needs to be deposited and slowly released.”
Professor Ten Cate
Head of the Department of Oral Health Sciences Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), Netherlands

Professor Xiaojing Chen

“It’s a smart material – when a child has an acidic drink, for example apple juice, BioMin® F releases its components faster to reduce the acidity and protect the teeth.”
Professor Ferranti Wong
Professor of Paediatric Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, England

Extra Fine Particles
Exposed dentine tubules are the pathway to sensitivity pain. BioMin® F particles are engineered to be small enough to enter and occlude these tubules.
Exposed dentine tubules are the pathway to sensitivity pain. BioMin® F particles are engineered to be small enough to enter and occlude these tubules.
BioMin® F bioglass particles are engineered to be 60% smaller than those found in NovaMin™ products, resulting in less abrasivity and deeper penetration of the dentinal tubules with acid resistant fluorapatite.
Fluorapatite is not just on the surface of the teeth, but also deep within the dentinal tubules. The tubular occlusion achieved with BioMin F is also much more resistant to dissolution, providing more effective and longer-lasting relief from dentine hypersensitivity.
In studies, BioMin® F has been shown to reduce fluid flow within the tubules by up to 90%, resolving one of the primary causes of sensitivity

BioMin® smart pH technology enhances the way that saliva replaces lost mineral on the tooth surfaces, adapting to individual needs.
While this is a general bioactive glass property,
BioMin® F optimises the Na+ and Ca2+ balance for better performance.
As bioactive glass degrades, H+ ions are exchanged for Na+ and Ca2+ ions, raising pH and slowing the reaction as acidity decreases.
The fluorapatite coating dissolves more quickly in acidic conditions, releasing mineral ions faster during acid attacks, offering enhanced protection against tooth sensitivity.

How do we Compare
BioMin® F performed best in terms of dentine hypersensitivity symptom reduction and the review concluded that BioMin F may be the most effective long-term treatment option for the relief of dentine hypersensitivity.
