What Causes Sensitivity?
The pain of sensitive teeth occurs when the tooth’s nerve is exposed to triggers such as hot or cold foods.
The enamel on the surface of our teeth typically serves as a protective barrier, preventing nerve exposure. However, enamel can wear away due to damage, decay, or demineralization caused by acidic and sugary foods.
When this happens, tiny pathways called tubules, located in the inner tooth structure, are exposed. This exposure allows fluid to move through these pathways to the nerve, causing a painful sensation.
