BioMin®, the innovative bioactive glass technology developed by Professor Robert Hill and his team at Queen Mary University of London, is now featured in a groundbreaking new dental varnish through a partnership with VOCO, a global leader in professional dental materials.

This collaboration has resulted in VOCO Profluorid Varnish + BioMin, a significant advancement in dental care. By combining VOCO’s best-selling Profluorid Varnish with BioMin’s unique slow-mineral release technology, the new formula enhances remineralisation and provides long-lasting desensitisation.

“Our partnership with VOCO is truly exciting. Collaborating with an industry leader allows us to bring this innovative product to market, powered by BioMin technology. Our goal is to expand access to BioMin’s bioactive glass technology, benefiting consumers worldwide, and this partnership is a significant step toward achieving that vision."

Alec Hilton, BioMin CEO

Significantly Hardens Weakened Enamel

The invisible and flavourless bioglass is already used with great success in other prophylaxis products, such as toothpaste. However, it is being used in a fluoride varnish for the first time. BioMin's bioglass dissolves in the presence of saliva, releases calcium and phosphate ions and thus supports the remineralisation of the tooth. In combination with the fluoride from the varnish, crystalline structures form on the tooth surface, which significantly harden, for example, acid-weakened enamel. VOCO Profluorid Varnish + BioMin thus offers patients double protection: in addition to the crystalline protective layer described above, the properties of VOCO Profluorid Varnish + BioMin also include comprehensive and long-lasting desensitisation of sensitive teeth, thanks to the fluoride it contains.

Sensitivity

VOCO Profluorid Varnish + BioMin contains 5% sodium fluoride (22,600 ppm fluoride), delivering the same high level of effectiveness as the original Profluorid Varnish, now enhanced with the remineralising and desensitising power of BioMin Technology. Research from Queen Mary University of London confirms that this advanced formula effectively seals the majority of open dentinal tubules, providing long-lasting protection while strengthening enamel, and reducing symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity.

Advantages:

  • Significantly hardens weakened enamel
  • Reliable desensitisation thanks to 5 % NaF (≙ 22,600 ppm fluoride)
  • Aesthetic, tooth-coloured varnish
  • Available in four flavours: mint, cherry, caramel and bubble gum
  • Ideal for treating cervical areas after professional cleaning and calculus removal
  • Can also be used for MIH patients
  • Applied in a thin layer and thus economical

Indications:

  • Treatment of hypersensitive teeth
  • Treatment of sensitive root surfaces
  • Promotion of remineralisation

  • What is the best way of discussing the benefits of BioMin versus other toothpastes on the market?

Keep it simple: BioMin® uses unique patented technology developed from a renowned British University and carries a medical device CE mark, so you know it has been clinically tested to the highest standards.

How does it work: BioMin® has been optimised to deliver the slow release of calcium, phosphate and fluoride ions that slowly dissolve in the saliva to form a protective apatite layer across the surface of the tooth, and within exposed tubules, delivering up to 12 hours of protection.

How does it compare to other toothpastes on the market: BioMin® has been extensively tested in clinical trials which are independently published and shared on their website. These trials show that it is the best option for treating sensitivity versus the better known, market leading brands.

How do I use it: Use it morning, before breakfast and evening, before bed every day. Brush for at least two minutes, then swirl the foam around your mouth for an additional 30 seconds, then spit and don’t rinse.

It is quite expensive: You only have one set of teeth, and we believe the best health products on the market are worth paying for.

  • Where can I get samples?

We are pleased to hear that you would like to learn more about BioMin® and sample our products. Please head over to our contact page and provide your practice details and GDC (or registered authorities) number so we can arrange for your local distributor, to contact you. For GDPR purposes, please also confirm you are happy for us to pass on your details to enable this.

  • What accreditation does BioMin toothpaste carry?

BioMin® Technologies is in receipt of both the Certificate of Registration of Quality Management System to I.S. EN ISO 13485:2016 and Quality System Approval Certificate Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC as a class IIb medical device.

It also carries a CE mark that proves we meet all standards to make medical claims.

Therefore, BioMin® F is clinically proven to reduce the effects of dentine hypersensitivity and to enhance the way saliva replaces lost tooth minerals.

The CE mark accreditation is recognised not only within Europe but has massive credibility worldwide of the stringent standards that we attain. BioMin® F has also achieved FDA 510K approval in the United States and approval from the Australian TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration).

  • How much fluoride does BioMin F toothpaste contain?

BioMin® F contains approximately 60% less fluoride than traditional toothpastes containing less than 600 ppm fluoride per tube. This compares to most supermarket toothpastes which contain around 1400-1500 ppm. BioMin® F’s fluoride delivery provides longer-lasting therapeutic benefit than standard soluble fluoride containing products. Whilst they have higher levels of fluoride, it is washed away almost immediately after brushing by rinsing, through salivary flow or eating and drinking. Our unique slow-release fluoride formula has been specifically formulated and optimised to continuously deposit an optimal concentration of calcium, phosphate and low level fluoride ions particularly for at risk patients. BioMin® binds to the tooth surface and slowly releases fluoride protection for up to 12 hours after brushing.

  • What is a nano-Hydroxyapatite toothpaste and how is Biomin different?

Nano-Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been around for several years most recently sold on its fluoride free benefits. It works by acting as an inert block to acids, so the HAP dissolves in preference to your enamel. But all HAP toothpastes vary with the HAP concentrations, and other ingredients and so many are ineffective in providing any protection above a regular toothpaste. Due to their nature the nano particles often aggregate to form large particles too big to be effective to occlude any dentinal tubules.

Biomin® was developed with an optimised particle size, designed to penetrate and occlude any open dentinal tubules creating a fluorapatite layer. This slowly dissolves under acid conditions, the stronger the acid attack the faster the release and so the better the protection. It is also worth noting that fluorapatite dissolves at pH of 4.0, HAP at a pH of 5.0, so is also more acid resistant, providing better, smarter all-round protection for up to 12 hours.

  • What is the Difference between BioMin F and Novamin™ ?

BioMin® and Novamin belong to the bioglass family, but their components are different. The BioMin® active compound is a newer compound called Fluoro Calcium Phosphosilicate. Novamin is a Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate.

The newer BioMin® F compound has three advantages:

    1. It contains fluoride within the glass structure, enabling slow and extended release of fluoride for up to 12 hours.
    2. It has a higher phosphate content for enhanced bioactivity closer to the optimal levels of mineral ions required in the saliva.
    3. It has smaller particles which are better able to penetrate and occlude the tooth’s open tubules.

There was a recent (2023) Systematic Review that concluded that Biomin® was more effective than Novamin in reducing the symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity. Novamin is the active ingredient in Sensodyne Repair and Protect™.

  • What is the Relative Dentine Abrasivity (RDA) of BioMin toothpaste?

BioMin® F is engineered with extra fine particles that are designed to penetrate and occlude open dentinal tubules. It is classed as a low abrasive toothpaste, with an RDA value of 68. The RDA testing method adopted by the American National Standards Institute has a safe upper limit of 250 RDA. It is essential for a sensitivity toothpaste to have low abrasion (below 70) to avoid any potential loss of the tooth surface.

  • How can BioMin help patients undergoing cancer treatment?

Head and neck cancer patients who undergo radiotherapy can occasionally experience reduced salivary flow (xerostomia) or have poor quality saliva and so are particularly prone to, dry mouth, de-mineralisation and decay (caries). Their taste perceptions are also often changed and can have increased sensitivity within the mouth, so many dental professionals often prefer to recommend toothpastes with mild mint flavours and low abrasivity that provide the additional protection they need, like BioMin®.

  • How can BioMin help patients with eating disorders?

Poor nutrition, acid reflux or vomiting and under/over-eating bring a range of health issues, and dental health is frequently affected. It can lead to enamel erosion, dentine hypersensitivity, reduced saliva flow (xerostomia), leading to decay (caries) and other gingivitis and periodontal problems. Cleaning your teeth twice daily with BioMin® F has been proven to help strengthen and protect the tooth enamel and reduce or eliminate the symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity. The smart technology in BioMin neutralises oral pH after exposure to acidic foods or vomit, which can prevent damage to the enamel and help reduce the risk of periodontal disease.

  • How can BioMin help patients undergoing orthodontic treatment or those suffering with dental fluorosis/White Spot Lesions (WSL)?

Dental fluorosis is a change in the appearance of the tooth’s enamel surface and is commonly associated risk with orthodontic treatment. Using Biomin® F or BioMin® C during and after treatment provides superior protection of the tooth enamel. As the bioactive material dissolves into the saliva, it releases optimal concentrations of calcium and phosphate ions that enhance the way our saliva replaces lost tooth mineral. It has also been independently reported that the light refractive properties of the active ingredient can assist to diminish the appearance of White Spot Lesions/Fluorosis.

  • Does BioMin F toothpaste have a whitening agent?

Most of the “whitening” and “brightening claims” made by retail toothpastes are based on the toothpaste having mild abrasives that can reduce surface staining. To receive significant whitening benefits consumers are advised to visit their dentist although the treatment here can use harsh chemicals that can damage the surface layer of the tooth.

BioMin® F is proven to help strengthen and protect the enamel and so while it has no whitening agent, it is an excellent partner in the whitening process and recommended by many dentists and hygienists as part of their whitening protocols. It offers protection against sensitivity, which is often heightened during whitening treatments and will help occlude any open tubules to prevent staining.

Bioglass Technology

A revolutionary bioactive material made with extra fine particles that bond to the tooth.

These particles penetrate and occlude the dentinal tubules for superior protection against sensitivity and strengthen and protect the tooth enamel. BioMin® F utilises a fluoride containing bioactive glass designed, patented and optimised specifically for use as a toothpaste additive.

It is unique in its ability to bond to the tooth enamel and dissolve slowly over 12 hours, delivering slow-release fluoride and optimal concentrations of calcium and phosphate ions. This enhances the way saliva replaces lost mineral on the tooth surfaces forming a fluorapatite layer that protects the tooth surface.

Slow-release Fluoride

Challenging our understanding of how much fluoride a toothpaste needs to contain

Challenging our understanding of how much fluoride a toothpaste needs to contain

  • Slow release

BioMin® F’s patented bioglass technology bonds to the tooth, slowly releasing fluoride for up to 12 hours enabling continuous production of acid resistant fluorapatite.

Research has shown that it’s not the quantity of fluoride that predicts a toothpaste’s ability to prevent decay, but the way it’s delivered.

Studies show BioMin® delivers superior performance with slow-release fluoride and higher phosphate, despite using 60% less fluoride than many OTC toothpastes.

  • Low Level

"Fluoride-containing bioactive glasses: Effect of glass design and structure on degradation, pH and apatite formation in simulated body fluid" (2010).

Delia S. Brauer, Natalia Karpukhina, Matthew D. O'Donnell, Robert V. Law, Robert G. Hill

BioMin® F challenges conventional fluoride concentrations with just 530ppm, releasing it slowly for advanced protection and lasting sensitivity relief.

Bioactive glasses with more than 5mol% CaF2 form fluorite rather than fluorapatite, the fluoride analogue of the tooth mineral.
    (see chart above)

A study* showed that BioMin® F with 900ppm soluble fluoride had similar apatite formation rates as BioMin® F alone, indicating the extra fluoride was washed away and therefore ineffective.

  • Backed by Scientists

“Simply increasing the amount of fluoride is not the solution, it invariably just goes to waste.”

Exposed dentine tubules are the pathway to sensitivity pain. BioMin® F particles are engineered to be small enough to enter and occlude these tubules.

Exposed dentine tubules are the pathway to sensitivity pain. BioMin® F particles are engineered to be small enough to enter and occlude these tubules.

BioMin® F bioglass particles are engineered to be 60% smaller than those found in NovaMin™ products, resulting in less abrasivity and deeper penetration of the dentinal tubules with acid resistant fluorapatite.

Fluorapatite is not just on the surface of the teeth, but also deep within the dentinal tubules. The tubular occlusion achieved with BioMin F is also much more resistant to dissolution, providing more effective and longer-lasting relief from dentine hypersensitivity.

BioMin® smart pH technology enhances the way that saliva replaces lost mineral on the tooth surfaces, adapting to individual needs.

While this is a general bioactive glass property,
BioMin® F optimises the Na+ and Ca2+ balance for better performance.

As bioactive glass degrades, H+ ions are exchanged for Na+ and Ca2+ ions, raising pH and slowing the reaction as acidity decreases.

The fluorapatite coating dissolves more quickly in acidic conditions, releasing mineral ions faster during acid attacks, offering enhanced protection against tooth sensitivity.
